Prague

I have just come back from a weekend in Prague, which in my humble opinion may be one of the prettiest cities in the world. Budapest is lovely, but now having been to Prague, I understand why it is the less visited of the two cities.
Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Vltava River

I arrived very late on Thursday night after a seven hour bus ride. Nothing was open, but the city looked lovely on the walk to my hostel. I spent all of  Friday and Saturday touring the old city. Our tour guide was excellent and told us a good deal about Czech history, which for me was fascinating.

Although none of my traveling companions agreed with me, I loved Prague. I love the history and the architecture, and the cleanliness. Admittedly it is very touristy. I had lunch at a place called Bohemia Bagel one day, and it was filled to the brim with the stupidest american students known to man. Similarly the old town is full of European tourists. All this aside, I felt very at home in Prague for some reason and wonder if I would have enjoyed studying there.

As a final note, there is no reason to ever go to Bratislava. You can see the two famous landmarks driving through it on a bus.

  1. Hi Kristy,

I've been reading your blogs and have enjoyed them very much. I agree with you that Prague is beautiful -- more so than the Budapest I saw.

In Budapest, we stayed at the Hilton which is in Pest and built into a rock up near the church. Go into it and see the part that is connected to the rock. They also have the best croissants Jerry and I have ever tasted.

I also had a ball going to the baths and having a massage (for next to nothing) at the old hotel that begins with a G and, I believe, is on the Pest side. I went around 10 in the morning and a whole bunch of old ladies were there trying to get under the spigot all holding plastic bags containing their valuables up in the air. When I had my massage and stood up, the woman threw a bucket of cold water to finish me off. I was surprised and very amused at that idea. The hotel is beautiful and the bath area is really a gem. Try it in on a rainy day.

  2. Hi June!

I'm glad you're enjoying the blogs!

I'll definitely have to find the Hilton. I love a good pastry. (The abundance of pastries is quite possibly my favorite thing about the city!)

Would the baths you mention possibly be the Gellert Baths? I think they may be in Buda, but they are attached to a hotel. I haven't gone bathing yet, but the next weekend I'm not traveling, that will be the first thing I do!

    Kristy
